For so many users around the world, myself included, Apple CarPlay plays a major role in your life. Every day you drive your car anywhere, you get greeted by it, and it is great!
Last year, at the WWDC event of 2022, Apple announced plans for a major upgrade to its current CarPlay software. This new version of the software is going to debut later this year, and it is going to come with a lot of changes.
Everything you need to know
A New Design
It has been so long since Apple’s CarPlay got any change to its design. CarPlay was originally launched with IOS 7, and it was originally launched as “IOS but for your car”. Then, it was rebranded to CarPlay, and ever since then, it did not get any major change to its design except for a small one that came with the launch of IOS 13.
This is no longer going to be the case since the upcoming upgrade is going to be a big change for the first time in a while. We still do not have the new design completely out, but Apple released so much of it during the event and gave us a sneak peek at what we can expect.
The new design will still feature a grid of apps to be used to access apps with ease, but it adds more features and makes shifting between these apps easier.
It will also feature a dock, similar to the one we have been used to from MacOS for years. The new CarPlay would even feature a split-screen feature to allow you to view more than one app at once.
Apple’s new CarPlay will not only show up on your car’s main display, but it will even take control of all other displays like the one behind the wheel of your car. CarPlay will adapt to different cars and different numbers of screens. It will even adjust the size of the apps according to the different screen sizes in different cars.
Apple said: CarPlay has fundamentally changed the way people interact with their vehicles, and the next generation of CarPlay goes even further by deeply integrating with a car’s hardware. CarPlay will be able to provide content for multiple screens within the vehicle, creating an experience that is unified and consistent.
Apple’s new CarPlay allows for so much more customization, and it will make sure that every driver gets a different experience according to his/her needs. You will now be capable of customizing your gauge cluster with different designs and you can manage the layout of the cluster itself. Apple will provide you with so many different designs, and you can choose from a modern layout to a more traditional design.
Apple will also give you control over the smaller things so that your layout as a whole is more appealing. You can now have your pick from custom fonts, font sizes, and font colors for various aspects of the car.
CarPlay will now get the ability to integrate with your car, and it will control many aspects of your car and not only what is displayed on the screen.
CarPlay can now access many features found in any car and control them in real-time. Your iPhone and CarPlay can now check your battery and fuel levels. It can control your radio, climate, and so much more.
According to Apple, CarPlay should be enough to control most of what is going on in your car, and it will make driving as a whole a smoother experience.
Conclusions and personal thoughts
So, finally, we come to the release date, and according to apple, you can expect the new iteration of CarPlay to make it sometime late in 2023, but as you can imagine, this is a big project. A large part of this project and what can really delay the launch of Apple’s CarPlay is indeed the car companies.
When Apple tries to integrate its software into a new car, the automaker has a lot to do, and so far, there is a huge list of automakers who signed on:
So far, we only had a sneak peek, but we got a lot more information than we expected, but Apple promised us more information about the new CarPlay before the launch, but even from this small peek, it looks really exciting, and I can not wait for it to feature in my car!
